The analytics views

Analytics is organised into five groups. Each answers a different kind of question, and you rarely need more than one at a time.

Your storefront at a glance. Start here, then follow whatever looks odd into one of the groups below. See Reading your analytics.

What is my storefront doing?

View Use it to
Cubes Compare cubes against each other — contribution and what people did on them
Entry points See which cubes people arrive on, and where they go next
Cube detail Analyse one cube in depth

Content is the group you will use most, because it is the one whose answers you can act on directly by editing a cube.

Where are people coming from?

Sources Compare traffic sources on attribution, coverage and quality
Bots Inspect crawler and automated traffic, which is excluded elsewhere

Sources is worth checking whenever you start sending traffic from somewhere new — it tells you not just how much arrived but whether it behaved like people who want to buy.

Who are they?

View Use it to
Segments Compare groups of visitors defined by how they behaved
Demographics Profile your visitors and their sessions
Sessions Inspect individual journeys, one at a time
Surveys Compare what people did after answering a survey

Surveys is the one people forget. If you ask a question in your storefront, this view tells you whether the answers predict anything.

Did it work?

Funnels See ordered steps, how long each took, and where people dropped
Actions Measure individual interaction and conversion events

When something looks wrong and you do not know why:

  1. Overview — confirm the change is real and the data is sound.
  2. Sources — check whether the mix of incoming traffic changed. Often it did, and nothing about your storefront is wrong at all.
  3. Cubes — find which content is involved.
  4. Sessions — watch a few real visits through it.
  5. Funnels — confirm where people are actually dropping.
