Categories

A category is a kind of cube, such as Shoes, Day tours or Recipes. Each cube has at most one. Shoppers pick categories in the built-in Category filter, and each category lists the filters its cubes use, such as Colour or Size.

Categories nest. Shopify’s go from broad to narrow (Apparel › Clothing › Outerwear › Coats & Jackets), and picking a category also shows the cubes in the categories below it.

A category is not a Structure. Structures group which cubes appear together. Categories describe what kind of thing a cube is.

Open Structure › Filters and choose Categories.

The list shows each category, where it came from (synced or created here), how many filters it has, and how many cubes belong to it. Turn off In Category filter to leave a category out of the Category filter without deleting it. The categories below it move up a level.

If your Space is connected to Shopify, choose Sync in Structure › Filters, or Sync categories in Categories. Rubikc reads the product categories your shop uses, their attributes (Colour, Size, and so on) and every value those attributes offer.

Products get their category from the category you set on the product in Shopify, and their filter values from the attributes you pick there, such as Colour or Size. That includes values you added yourself in Shopify, not only Shopify’s standard ones. Products in Shopify’s Uncategorized category aren’t listed in the Category filter.

After a sync, Categories shows what it brought in: categories, filters, values, and how many products were linked. If Shopify didn’t share your products’ values, a notice says so. Approve the updated app permissions in Shopify, then sync products and sync categories again.

This sync does not create Sources or change cubes. It is not part of syncing everything on the integration: start it here, or choose Categories in the Shopify card’s sync menu under Settings › Integrations. Rubikc also starts it on its own when a product sync finds a category it hasn’t seen.

If your Space is connected to Bókun, categories and filters come from your experiences every time Bókun syncs:

From Bókun Becomes
Experience type (Day tour or activity, Event, …) A category
Categories (Bike tour, Diving, …) The Activity filter
Themes (Family friendly, Outdoor, …) The Theme filter
Physical difficulty The Difficulty filter
Duration The Duration filter: Up to 1 hour, 1–4 hours, 4–8 hours, Full day or Multi-day
City The City filter
What’s included (Food and drinks, Wifi, …) The Includes filter

Each experience’s cube gets its category and values on its own, including cubes you create later. Sync rebuilds categories from the experiences already in your Space. It does not fetch from Bókun again — run a Bókun sync first when experiences have changed. Only values your experiences use are listed.

Available is not part of that sync. It is the filter for which days an experience can be booked, and syncing experiences does not refresh it. Turn it on under Automations, then add it in Filters.

Open any cube and choose the Filters tab.

  • Category: choose a category, or No category.
  • Add a value: pick a filter, then a value. Filters of the cube’s category are listed first. For a filter you created, New value… adds a value to it as you go. New filter… creates a filter with its first value, such as Season: Summer.
  • Remove a value with its ×. A value from Shopify or Bókun stays listed, struck through, so you can restore it.

For a cube from Shopify or Bókun, the category and values come from the product or experience. Syncs keep your changes. Reset drops them and uses what the integration has for the product again.

Categories, filters and values from Shopify keep their Shopify names. To change what people see, give them a display name. A category’s display name is also its name in the Category filter. To leave a filter or value out, hide it. A later sync updates the Shopify details and keeps your display names and hidden items.

Deleting a category that came from Shopify hides it instead, because the next sync would bring it back.

Shoppers see categories, filters and values in the storefront’s language. A display name is the name in your Space’s default language. Other languages each have their own field, under Name in other languages on a category or filter, and behind the languages icon on each value. Fields save as you leave them.

A language you leave blank shows, in order:

  1. Shopify’s own translation, for categories, filters and values that come from Shopify’s product categories. Values you made yourself in Shopify use the translations you gave them there.
  2. Rubikc’s translation, for the built-in filters.
  3. Otherwise the display name, or the name.

Shopify’s translations come in with Sync. Add a language to your Space? Run Sync again to bring in its names. Categories and filters from Bókun, and ones you created in Rubikc, have no translations, so name them in each language yourself. Category filter values use their category’s names, so name them on the category.

  1. Open Structure › Filters and choose Categories.

  2. Choose Create category and give it a name.

  3. Open the category and choose Add filter. Link a filter you already have, or create a new one and enter its values, one per line.

Use this when a kind of cube is not in Shopify’s categories, or when you want a filter list that Shopify doesn’t have. A filter doesn’t need a category: create one in Filters. Categories you create sit at the top level of the Category filter.

Open a category and choose a filter. For a filter you created, you can rename it and add, rename or delete values. For a filter from Shopify, you can set display names and hide values. Each value shows how many cubes have it.

Because filters are shared, a change here applies to every category that uses the filter.
